Whately, a town of about 1500 people at the southern edge of Franklin County was incorporated in 1771.  Originally included within the bounds of Hatfield, Whately was made up of portions of the second division and all of the fourth division of the Hatfield Commons.  Slowly settled after conflicts with the native population began to abate, residents of the northern reaches of Hatfield petitioned to separate and this petition was granted.

The Whately Historical Society, founded in 1966, works to preserve the town’s history and to education townspeople and others about Whately’s past.  The Society sponsors programs and activities about the history and culture of the area.  The WHS also maintains a museum of Whately artifacts, images, and ephemera.
