Scope and Content: The Executive Office of Labor coordinates state agencies responsible for worker economic rights, health, and safety; and for labor bargaining units, collective bargaining, and settlement of labor disputes. Administrative issue and policy files are maintained by the secretary of labor’s office to track policies and issues in which the executive office has interest or oversight from inception through planning and implementation.

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Labor and Industries is responsible for enforcement of laws pertaining to labor and employment and was formerly required to verify, maintain, and publicize filings of labor organizations operating in Massachusetts. This series was created by the department’s Division of Statistics to meet the requirements of St 1946, c 618 for unions to file a statement outlining the aims and objectives of the union, the names and addresses of officers, the scale of dues, fees, fines, and assessments, and the salaries to be paid to the officers; and to file an annual report detailing all expenditures and payments. The department maintained these files until 1981, when the U.S. Dept. of Labor assumed the responsibility and the Division of Statistics was abolished (St 1981, c 351, s 250). Additionally the series was created to gather data published in: Directory of labor organizations in Massachusetts.

Scope and Content: The State Board of Conciliation and Arbitration was established in 1886; until 1902 it was known as the State Board of Arbitration and Conciliation or the State Board of Arbitration. It was succeeded in 1919 by the Board of Conciliation and Arbitration, part of the Department of Labor and Industries.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Industrial Commission was established in 1926 in the Department of Labor and Industries. It was renamed the Massachusetts Industrial and Development Commission in 1932 and abolished in 1933. It was revived as the Massachusetts Development and Industrial Commission in 1937 and was abolished in 1953, when its powers and duties were combined with those of the State Planning Board in the Department of Commerce.
