Scope and Content: Edward Howe Forbush was elected Ornithologist to the State Board of Agriculture in 1894, named State Ornithologist by the state board in 1908, and became director of the Division of Ornithology  (Dept. of Agriculture) in 1919.  Resolves 1921, c 5 authorized the publication of Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States for the purpose of studying the economic value, geographical distribution, and life history of the birds of New England

Scope and Content: Hartwell was born in Natick, Mass. and served in the U.S. Army during the Civil War, with a final rank of colonel.  He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1867, then attorney general and later Supreme Court chief justice for the Territory of Hawaii.

Scope and Content: Herbert Parker was the president of the Bar Association of the City of Boston, and chairmen of the Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary Commission, established in 1929 to plan the Commonwealth’s celebration the following year of the tercentenary of the founding of the Massachusetts Bay colony.  Papers contain documents and artifacts of the celebration sponsored by the commission. –Included are mss. of speeches delivered at the Great Meeting at Boston Common on July 15, 1930, among them verses written for the celebration by Robert Grant, introductions made at the Great Meeting, a speech given at the reception and luncheon (including description of persons seated at the head table), and a speech at the Hall of Flags; also programs, invitations, tickets, and badges from the Great Meeting and other Tercentenary events. –Photographs of the Great Meeting in an album are of procession to the pavilion at the Common and of guests, including Calvin Coolidge, ambassadors, and other dignitaries; also shown are military processions, speeches from the pavilion, including that of Gov. Scope and Content: The Commonwealth had a continuing interest in the United States-Great Britain dispute over the northeastern boundary of Maine, from the Revolution to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842; to 1820, as the state of which the District of Maine formed a part; from 1820, and pursuant to St 1819, c 161, an act to provide for separation of the District of Maine as a state, as the holder of title to certain Maine public lands.  Series consists of correspondence and reports relating to the dispute sent or received by the governor and others.

Scope and Content: When the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) was established in 1919 as a successor to the Metropolitan Park Commission (MPC) and the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board, the Engineering Dept. of the MDC’s Parks Division continued the functions of the Engineering Dept. of the MPC.  Known also as Park Engineering, Parks Engineering, and the Parks Engineering Dept., it was designated at least as early as 1953 as the Division of Parks Engineering, until absorbed into the Engineering Division by 1975.

Scope and Content: The Metropolitan Park Commission (MPC) (1893-1919) and its successor the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) (since 1919) have been responsible for oversight of the acquisition, maintainance, policing, and use of the Metropolitan Parks District (Boston and surrounding communities).  Among the secretary’s duties was granting of permits to municipalities, private businesses, and individuals for use of parks and waterways under the jurisdiction of MDC.  The secretary maintained this copy as the official record of the permit and forwarded a copy to the superintendent of the MDC park or reservation.

Scope and Content: The Boston Lunatic Hospital was established as a municipal agency in 1839; it was renamed Boston Insane Hospital in 1897.  It was made a Massachusetts state agency under the name Boston State Hospital in 1908 and closed in 1981.

Scope and Content: The Fall River Mental Health Center apparently originated in 1968 as a successor to the Union Hospital (Fall River, Mass.) Mental Health Center; by 1971 it was called the Dr. John C. Corrigan Mental Health Center.  The Corrigan Mental Health Center is a public mental health facility operating under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Dept. of Mental Health (DMH), providing acute care for local residents and continuing care services for DMH eligible clients, with limited inpatient facilities.
