Scope and Content: The Engineering Department of the Metropolitan Park Commission was responsible for planning, engineering, and supervising construction of parkways, bridges, locks, rinks, and other recreational and park facilities under the commission’s jurisdiction. This notebook consists of printed forms filled in by department inspectors overseeing pile driving work done on commission construction projects.

Scope and Content: To establish accurate Massachusetts town boundaries, and eventually interstate boundaries as well, beginning in 1885 the Topographical Survey Commission (replaced in this function in 1901 by the Board of Harbor and Land Commissioners) sent out field teams to establish and describe triangulation stations and to set monuments designating boundary lines. These position tables are based on the notebooks of the survey teams, with a few earlier observations included as well. Calculations were verified, adjusted, and prepared by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

Scope and Content: Since 1978, and with direct legislative authorization since 1983, the Coastal Zone Management Office within the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs has administered the interagency Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management Program, which was established under the auspices of the federal Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, PL 92-583. The office reviews all activities directly affecting the coastal zone that require federal permits, to ensure that these are in compliance with approved state environmental management mandates such as provided in the Coastal Wetlands Restriction Act (St 1965, c 768). It also reviews coastal-zone related projects requiring state or local permits and works with other state agencies to improve regulatory mechanisms to protect coastal resources and to set coastal management policies and priorities. Series is created to review and approve development projects involving use of coastal resources, in accordance with the provisions of MGLA c 91 (Waterways), and to certify compliance with all state environmental policies.

Scope and Content: The Metropolitan District Water Supply Commission was created for the purpose of extending and increasing the water supply to the Massachusetts metropolitan water system (St 1926, c 375). The commission was authorized to take property in the watersheds of the Swift and Ware rivers to develop the Swift River Reservoir, renamed Quabbin Reservoir, Oct. 1932. Preparation for construction of the reservoir included disinterment, transfer, and reburial from cemeteries in part of the area to be flooded (Swift River Valley, towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, Prescott, also New Salem, Petersham) to the Quabbin Park Cemetery (QPC) or other locations. Photographs provide evidence of the original gravesite and marker prior to removal.

Scope and Content: The Commissioners on Public Lands were established in 1861 to oversee Boston Harbor and Back Bay lands. In 1863 they assumed full responsibility for the maintenance and care of the Mill Dam (now Beacon Street) and the roads and bridges connecting to it. Receipts were maintained by the commissioners to provide a record of funds received and disbursed in the course of carrying out these responsibilities.
