Scope and Content: The Charles River (Echo) Bridge was constructed by the Boston Water Board (1875-1877) to transport the Sudbury River Conduit (later Aqueduct) over the Charles River as it runs through Newton Upper Falls. Today the aqueduct is used for emergency backup only, but this section of it can be traced on foot by a path running from Ellis Street, Newton Upper Falls, to Reservoir Street, Needham. Scope and Content: As the body responsible for the general care and supervision of Massachusetts harbors and tidewaters, the Board of Harbor and Land Commissioners had as its primary function to insure that the channels were fully navigable and to otherwise protect, improve, and develop these areas.  St 1881, c 196 provided that the boundaries of municipalities bordering on the sea would extend to the line of the Commonwealth as already defined by law. The commissioners were to locate and define the boundaries between localities from the high water mark outward, and to file reports accompanied by suitable plans and exhibits, showing said boundary lines, with the appropriate registry of deeds and the office of the state secretary. Reports were issued by county: Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes and Nantucket, Plymouth and Norfolk, and Suffolk and Essex. –Accompanying plans are found in: Massachusetts. Scope and Content: The Metropolitan Park Commission (MPC) (1893-1919) and its successor the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) (since 1919) have been responsible for oversight of the acquisition, maintenance, policing, and use of land for the Metropolitan Parks District (Boston and surrounding communities).  Series is created to document reservation land, parkways, and buildings owned and operated by the commissions.

Scope and Content: Massachusetts has administered water works and sewage disposal for the Boston metropolitan area successively through the Board of Metropolitan Sewerage Commissioners (Metropolitan Sewerage Commission) (1889-1901) and the Metropolitan Water Board (1895-1901); the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board (1901-1919); and the Water and Sewerage Divisions of the Metropolitan District Commission (1919-1985).  Since 1985, the sewerage works functions have been assigned to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), and the water works functions have been shared by the MWRA (distribution) and the Metropolitan District Commission (to 2003) and the Dept.  of Conservation and Recreation (since 2003) (water supply reservoirs and their watershed management).

Scope and Content: To establish accurate Massachusetts town boundaries, beginning in 1885 the Topographical Survey Commission sent out field teams to establish and describe triangulation stations and to set monuments designating boundary lines.  These volumes of resulting horizontal directions, triangle sides, and geographical positions are based on the field notebooks of the survey teams.  Calculations were verified, adjusted, and prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey and the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

Scope and Content: As part of their function to supervise the waterways of Massachusetts, the Division of Waterways of the Department of Public Works and its predecessors in this function (the Board of Harbor and Land Commissioners, to 1916, the Commission on Waterways and Public Lands, 1916-1919, and the Department of Public Works as a whole, 1927-1938) conducted surveys of rivers, ponds, and harbors.  Survey notebooks contain computations needed to map rivers.
