Scope and Content: To establish accurate Massachusetts town boundaries, and eventually interstate boundaries as well, beginning in 1885 the Topographical Survey Commission (replaced in this function in 1901 by the Board of Harbor and Land Commissioners) sent out field teams to establish and describe triangulation stations and to set monuments designating boundary lines. These volumes of abstracts of horizontal angles are based on field notebooks of the survey teams. Computations were verified, adjusted, and prepared by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

Scope and Content: Massachusetts has administered water works and sewage disposal for the Boston metropolitan area successively through the Board of Metropolitan Sewerage Commissioners (Metropolitan Sewerage Commission) (1889-1901) and the Metropolitan Water Board (1895-1901); the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board (1901-1919); and the Water and Sewerage Divisions of the Metropolitan District Commission (1919-1985). Since 1985, the sewerage works functions have been assigned to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), and the water works functions have been shared by the MWRA (distribution) and the Metropolitan District Commission (to 2003) and the Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (since 2003) (water supply reservoirs and their watershed management).

Scope and Content: The Hazardous Waste Facility Site Safety Council was an independent Massachusetts state agency responsible in conjunction with the Dept. of Environmental Management and the Dept. of Environmental Protection for overseeing siting of hazardous waste treatment facilities from 1980 to 1996. Siting process as administered by the council included receiving and reviewing developer’s proposal and facilitating negotiations among developer and affected communities prior to the reaching of a siting agreement declared operative by the council. Series was created to administer the general mission of the agency.

Scope and Content: The Metropolitan District Water Supply Commission was created for the purpose of extending and increasing the water supply to the Massachusetts metropolitan water system (St 1926, c 375). The commission was authorized to purchase or take land in the watersheds of the Swift and Ware rivers to develop the Quabbin reservoir. These administrative records document the taking of real estate by eminent domain.

Scope and Content: The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) is responsible for oversight of functions relating to the metropolitan park, water, and sewerage districts, consisting of Boston and surrounding communities. In preparation for the 1930 Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary Exposition (arranged by the Tercentenary Commission on Massachusetts Governmental Activities), the MDC took aerial photographs for an exhibit highlighting the work of the agency.

Scope and Content: When the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) was established in 1919 as a successor to the Metropolitan Park Commission (MPC) and the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board, the Engineering Dept. of the MDC’s Parks Division continued the functions of the Engineering Dept. of the MPC. Known also as Park Engineering, Parks Engineering, and the Parks Engineering Dept., it was designated at least as early as 1953 as the Division of Parks Engineering, until absorbed into the Engineering Division by 1935.

Scope and Content: The Water Division of the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) was responsible for both the adequacy of supply and the purity of water provided to the Metropolitan Water District (Boston and surrounding communities). In addition it assumed the function of the Metropolitan District Water Supply Commission to develop and maintain the Quabbin Reservoir (St 1947, c 583) as a source of water for the Metropolitan Water District. Aerial photographs were taken to document water sources and to create photogrammetric maps for engineering and planning.

Scope and Content: The Division of Markets was established within the Dept. of Agriculture to ascertain agricultural products in demand, encourage their growth in Massachusetts, and inform outside purchasers or distributors as to the condition and demand of Massachusetts markets. The division (and from 1981 the Bureau of Markets) has created a newsletter service replacing one by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture to meet the need for information about supply and demand in Boston, Springfield, and Worcester. –It was developed in cooperation with growers’ associations, farm bureaus, and cooperative extensions and has been distributed by mail, in newspapers, and over radio stations throughout the Commonwealth. Information for item entries includes agricultural commodity, unit of sale, and range of wholesale or retail price. Other newsletter information has included level of demand, weather or other crop-related alerts, and meeting notices. Subseries (1) is issued daily; subseries (2) weekly, with a few additional annual reports for Boston by commodity listing weekly figures by store, with spine title: Retail prices by stores.
