Scope and Content: Middlesex County was incorporated on May 10, 1643 (Mass Recs 2:38), continuing under successive governments of Massachusetts, most recently the Commonwealth (1780), as outlined in MGLA c 34.  Administrative powers and duties previously exercised at various times under the laws of the Commonwealth by the county courts of general sessions of the peace, county courts of common pleas, and circuit courts of common pleas, were assigned to commissioners in Middlesex and other counties, per St 1827, c 77 (1828).  The government of Middlesex County in this and other respects was abolished as of the effective date of St 1997, c 48 (approved July 11, 1997)

Scope and Content: Middlesex County was incorporated on May 10, 1643 (Mass Recs 2:38), continuing under successive governments of Massachusetts, most recently the Commonwealth (1780), as outlined in MGLA c 34.  Administrative powers and duties previously exercised at various times under the laws of the Commonwealth by county treasurers and clerks of the county courts of general sessions of the peace, county courts of common pleas, and circuit courts of common pleas, were assigned to commissioners in Middlesex and other counties upon their establishment per St 1827, c 77 (1828).  The commissioners maintained financial information concerning highways, county property, reservoirs and buildings (including jails), other county assets, as well as county debt. The government of Middlesex County was abolished as of the effective date of St 1997, c 48 (approved July 11, 1997).

Scope and Content: Middlesex County was incorporated on May 10, 1643 (Mass Recs 2:38), continuing under successive governments of Massachusetts, most recently the Commonwealth (1780), as outlined in MGLA c 34.  Administrative powers and duties previously exercised at various times under the laws of the Commonwealth by county treasurers and clerks of the county courts of general sessions of the peace, county courts of common pleas, and circuit courts of common pleas, were assigned to commissioners in Middlesex and other counties upon their establishment per St 1827, c 77 (1828).  They maintained county financial information, such as accounts of receipts (including county taxes) and expenditures, in conjunction with the county treasurer, who had previously kept county financial information (see:  Massachusetts. Treasury Office. County treasurer accounts, 1798-1836 ((M-Ar)2399X)). The commissioners were responsible for county assets and property including highways, reservoirs and buildings (including jails), as well as county debt. The government of Middlesex County was abolished as of the effective date of St 1997, c 48 (approved July 11, 1997).

Scope and Content: The Middlesex County Truant School (renamed Middlesex County Training School per St 1908, c 103) was authorized by St 1892, c 273 and opened in 1894 for the commitment of boys in that county and from Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop between the ages of seven and sixteen adjudged habitual truants, absentees, or school offenders.  The school was closed in 1973.  Inmate case files were created as a central source for each inmate’s personal and institutional history.

Scope and Content: The commission was created by St 2012, c 165, to examine and streamline operation and management of the Commonwealth’s county registries of deeds, including expansion of use of technology and possible consolidation of all registries under the state secretary’s office, already responsible for registries from counties where county government had been discontinued. The fourteen members included representatives of the Senate, House of Representatives, and registers (i.e., registrars) of deeds, gubernatorial designees, and a designee of the state secretary, Assistant Secretary of the Commonwealth Michael Maresco, who chaired the group. The commission met from April through December of 2013, including public hearings in Boston, Springfield, and Worcester, after which a final report was submitted to three relevant joint legislative committees of the General Court..
