Scope and Content: The Government Land Bank operated as an independent agency from 1975 to Dec. 1995, at which time it began doing business jointly with the Massachusetts Industrial Finance Agency as the Massachusetts Development Finace Agency.  The two agencies were officially merged under the latter name in 1998.

Scope and Content: Middlesex County was incorporated on May 10, 1643 (Mass Recs 2:38), continuing under successive governments of Massachusetts, most recently the Commonwealth (1780), as outlined in MGLA c 34.  Administrative powers and duties previously exercised at various times under the laws of the Commonwealth by the county courts of general sessions of the peace, county courts of common pleas, and circuit courts of common pleas, were assigned to commissioners in Middlesex and other counties, per St 1827, c 77 (1828).  The government of Middlesex County in this and other respects was abolished as of the effective date of St 1997, c 48 (approved July 11, 1997)

Scope and Content: The task force was responsible for oversight of all energy development issues.  In performing its duties it reviewed legislation and reports, and recommended policy positions to the governor.  These meeting packets were created to document the decisions of the monthly meetings.  These were maintained by the governor’s cabinet coordinator to the task force.

Scope and Content: The State Reform School for Girls was established in 1855 and opened in 1856 at Lancaster as the State Industrial School for Girls.  From 1911 until its closing in 1972 it was known as the Industrial School for Girls.

Memorandum of claims to land in the town of Penobscot [Massachusetts Land Office]

Memorandum of claims to land in the town of Penobscot, 1819.

Scope and Content: Under successive authorizations, the Land Office oversaw the management and sale of public lands in Maine for the Commonwealth during the first half of the 19th century.  As a part of this function, the office administered and recorded the settlement of disputed claims.  This memorandum was prepared by Joseph Lee, one of the commissioners of the Land Office.  It represents his work in following up the findings of George Herbert as presented in his Report concerning lands mortgaged by Leonard Jarvis ((M-Ar)87X).  Lee visited individuals claiming lands in the town of Penobscot to discuss their claims and Herbert’s findings.

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Public Welfare has the responsibility to provide and administer a comprehensive public welfare financial assistance program (MGLA c 18, s 2). Until 1967 the department organized the state into districts to carry out this program, originally staffed by the Division of Aid and Relief (Division of Public Assistance from 1953), under a district supervisor, and from the early 1950s (cf. St 1952, c 602) also by the Division of Child Guardianship, with respective district supervisors under a district director.  Memorandums to district directors from the Office of Field Operations (or from other officials of the department but copied to or distributed by the office) communicated directives and policy decisions.
