Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength. During and after the Civil War these activities were intensified, particularly as they related to fulfillment of municipal recruitment quotas and determinations of entitlement to state aid, bounties, and other benefits. This series indexes personnel of the state’s military organization who were transferred from the Army to the Navy. Recording this information became especially important in 1864 after Congress (Acts of 1864, c 13, s 9; c 237, s 8) made it possible to credit naval enlistments to the quotas for which the municipalities were responsible.

This series provides an inventory of what appear to be certain consumable ordnance stores located in various municipalities throughout Massachusetts.

Notes: While matters concerning artillery and ordnance stores characteristically are associated with the position of Quartermaster, that office was in a state of hiatus from 1821 until 1861. Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, came to be responsible for preserving and administering information about all aspects of the state’s military service. During the Spanish-American War, many persons and organizations offered various services to the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, such as raising troops, use of private property, and professional and technical assistance such as engineering and medicine. This series identifies persons and organizations offering such contributions.
