Adjutant General’s Office: List of seamen and officers from Boston in the U.S. Navy

Part of: Massachusetts Adjutant General's Office

List of seamen and officers from Boston in the U.S. Navy, 1861-1865.

1 folder; Copies: Partial microfilm reel
Call no.: PS1/1077X

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength; these activities were intensified during the Civil War.  This series, apparently prepared retrospectively, lists men from Boston who saw service in the U.S. Navy at that time.  It was probably created to validate allowances stemming from federal legislation (Acts of 1864, c 13, s 9; c 237, s 8) that made it possible to credit municipalities with naval enlistments in fulfilling their quotas.
Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by surname
