Scope and Content: The Dept. of Correction is responsible for administering the state correctional system and providing custodial and rehabilitative services to persons sentenced to state correctional institutions. Lists of capital punishment cases at state prison facilities (i.e., Castle Island, Charlestown, and Walpole) were created by the central office of the department to compile statistics.

Scope and Content: The Land Lottery, created by the General Court in 1786 to accelerate the sale and settlement of public lands in the District of Maine, was commissioned to conduct a lottery for the twin purposes of raising revenues and distributing land in the Lincoln County area of Maine. With the drawing of the lottery in October 1787, prize lots were distributed among the holders of chances. This series details the transfers of land made on the basis of the drawing.

Scope and Content: To assist the Office of the Secretary of State in fulfilling its responsibility to administer laws and regulations governing the activities of legislative agents (lobbyists) employed by special interest groups, the Public Records Division, specifically from the 1980s through its Lobbyist Section, registers and maintains a docket of vital information on each legislative agent, as required by MGLA c 3, s 41. Prior to 1974 these records were maintained by the sergeant-at-arms of the General Court.

By the 1970s the activity had been delegated to the Public Records Division, and from the 1980s more specifically to the division’s Lobbyist Section.

Scope and Content: To assist the state secretary’s office in fulfilling its responsibility to administer laws and regulations governing the activities of legislative agents (lobbyists) employed by special interest groups, the Public Records Division, specifically from the 1980s through its Lobbyist Section, inspects all financial disclosure statements filed according to MGLA c 3, ss 43, 44, 47, to determine if any employers of agents, organizations without agents, or agents have failed to file. The division is responsible for sending a report to the attorney general if filing is not completed. –Files for 1975-1981 also include general annual lists of agents and organizations.
