Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength; these activities were intensified during the Civil War.  This series of ms. notes and ms. and printed forms served to certify the enlistment terms of service of naval recruits at that time.  It also determined the vessel to which the recruit was assigned.

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, was made responsible for annual inspections of militia troops pursuant to St 1793, c 14, though at certain periods, notably the Civil War years, the task was delegated to an inspector general.  This series consists of letterpress copies of correspondence regarding such inspections from the adjutant general, acting as inspector general, to assistant inspector generals and other subordinate officers.
