Lottery tickets [Massachusetts Land Lottery]

Lottery tickets, 1787-1789.

Scope and Content: The Land Lottery, created by the General Court in 1786 to accelerate the sale and settlement of public lands in the District of Maine, was commissioned to conduct a lottery for the twin purposes of raising revenues and distributing land in Maine.  Lottery chances were sold for townships and lots in in that part of the Lincoln County area between the Penobscot and Schoodic Rivers.  Tickets removed from Lottery stub books ((M-Ar)82X) were presented to those purchasing chances.  Tickets and stubs had corresponding numbers.

Memorandum of claims to land in the town of Penobscot, 1819.

Scope and Content: Under successive authorizations, the Land Office oversaw the management and sale of public lands in Maine for the Commonwealth during the first half of the 19th century.  As a part of this function, the office administered and recorded the settlement of disputed claims.  This memorandum was prepared by Joseph Lee, one of the commissioners of the Land Office.  It represents his work in following up the findings of George Herbert as presented in his Report concerning lands mortgaged by Leonard Jarvis ((M-Ar)87X).  Lee visited individuals claiming lands in the town of Penobscot to discuss their claims and Herbert’s findings.

Scope and Content: The Brunswick Convention met Sept. 30-Oct. 9, 1816, to consider separating the District of Maine from Massachusetts as a state.  Memorials are petitions sent to the General Court in November, constituting majority and minority reports on the convention’s proceedings.

Scope and Content: Under successive authorizations, the Committee for the Sale of Eastern Lands (1783-1801) and the Land Office were the agencies with responsibility for the management and sale of public lands in Maine on behalf of the Commonwealth.  In performing these activities they took in and expeanded monies.  These files provide the back-up documentation for much of the business undertaken.  Throughout these files are found an assortment of bills, receipts, and statements of expenditures relating to the purchase of services and/or sale of real estate by the various agencies.

Scope and Content: Under successive authorizations, the Land Office oversaw the management and sale of public lands in Maine for the Commonwealth during the first half of the 19th century.  As a part of this function, the office administered and recorded the settlement of disputed claims.  This series consists of a report made by George Herbert, an agent appointed by the governor in 1815 to investigate the disposition of a tract of public lands in Maine mortgaged by the late Leonard Jarvis earlier in the century.  Since then settlers had occupied lots in this tract, resulting in a variety of claims.

Scope and Content: Pursuant to Resolves 1798, c 64 and Resolves 1800, c 143, commissioners were appointed by the governor in 1803 to quiet claims of settlers on undivided lands (allowing for land purchase) and divided lands remaining with the proprietors of the Pejepscot Claim in the District of Maine after referees had fixed the claim’s boundaries.  Series consists of a report of the commmissioners’ work listing settlers on lands awarded to the claim’s proprietors by the referees.

Notes: Report was submitted to the General Court in 1804.  Resolves 1806, Jan Sess 1807, c 60 indicates that it was later transferred to the state secretary’s office. Bound with: Massachusetts. Scope and Content: Under successive authorizations, the Land Office oversaw the management and sale of public lands in Maine for the Commonwealth during the first half of the 19th century.  As a part of this function, the office administered and recorded the settlement of disputed claims.  This report documents the validation and settlement of claims relating to lands mortgaged by Leonard Jarvis, based on findings earlier determined in a report by George Herbert (Report concerning lands mortgaged by Leonard Jarvis ((M-Ar)87X); see also Joseph Lee’s Memorandum of claims to land in the town of Penobscot ((M-Ar)78X)).  This report, concerning land in Penobscot, Surrey, and Ellsworth, reflects the actual adjustment of claims made by the Land Office for those individuals who had settled on or taken possession of lands mortgaged to Jarvis.

Scope and Content: Pursuant to St 1819, c 161, an act to provide for separation of the District of Maine from Massachusetts as a state, commissioners were appointed to divide public lands and other property between the two states, including military stores (s 1: 2nd).  Series is a report ordered by the commissioners as an inventory of military stores on hand to be divided two to one between Massachusetts and Maine.

Scope and Content: The Committee for the Sale of Eastern Lands was created by the General Court to oversee the management and sale of public lands in the District of Maine.  During the course of its first twelve years, the activities of the committee met with indifferent results.  Consequently in 1795 the General Court directed the committee to suspend all subsequent sales and to prepare a report on its activities from the time of its creation in 1783 (Resolves 1794, Jan 1795 Sess, c 131).  This document, dated June 16, 1795, comprises the report sought by the General Court.
