Scope and Content: The Land Lottery, created by the General Court in 1786 to accelerate the sale and settlement of public lands in the District of Maine, was commissioned to conduct a lottery for the twin purposes of raising revenues and distributing land in the Lincoln County area of Maine. These files contain a potpourri of disparate communications made and received by the managers of the Land Lottery. Included are letters, receipts, lists of ticket holders, copies of resolves, and updated draft reports of the managers to the General Court.

Scope and Content: Commissioners appointed pursuant to Resolves 1811, c 34 to review surrendered claims and determine compensatory grants to nonresident proprietors in Lincoln County, District of Maine, met in late 1811 and 1812 to receive testimony of proprietors and town settlers, submission, and deeds of release. Deeds of release transferred title from nonresident proprietors to the Commonwealth.

Scope and Content: Commissioners appointed pursuant to a General Court order, Feb. 27, 1811, to investigate and recommend remedies for unrest over conflicting land claims in Lincoln County, District of Maine, met May 1-10 in several affected towns and submitted their report to Governor Elbridge Gerry on May 20. Scope and Content: Under successive authorizations, the Committee for the Sale of Eastern Lands (1783-1801) and the Land Office were the primary agencies with responsibility for the management and sale of public lands in Maine on behalf of the Commonwealth. As part of their land management function they regularly commissioned surveys of Commonwealth land in Maine. In commissioning survey work, they identified surveyors and provided them with detailed instructions. Surveys variously were designed to delineate the bounds of large tracts, subdivide tracts into townships and lots, or support exploration and road building. These instructions are agency copies of that which was prepared and placed in the hands of the surveyors.

These books record and summarize those receipts and expenditures.

Scope and Content: The Land Lottery, created by the General Court in 1786 to accelerate the sale and settlement of public lands in the District of Maine, was commissioned to conduct a lottery for the twin purposes of raising revenues and distributing land in the Lincoln County area of Maine. With the drawing of the lottery in October 1787, prize lots were distributed among the holders of chances. This series details the transfers of land made on the basis of the drawing.

Scope and Content: The Land Lottery, created by the General Court in 1786 to accelerate the sale and settlement of public lands in the District of Maine, was commissioned to conduct a lottery for the twin purposes of raising revenues and distributing land in the Lincoln County area of Maine. In conducting the lottery, the managers prepared ticket books consisting of stubs and corresponding tickets. The stub books comprise the numbered stubs from which tickets had been removed for sale, although in each volume a large number remain attached to the stubs.
