Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Consumers’ Council was an independent state agency serving as public advocate for consumer interests from 1963 to 1981, advising on and representing consumer interests to the state government, promoting consumer education, and from 1970 overseeing the unit pricing of packaging in retail stores. Correspondence files contain incoming and copies of outgoing letters and memorandums written for files of the executive secretary, chairman, and other staff, created in carrying out the responsibilities outlined above.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Geographic Board was established by the governor at the request of the United States Geographic Board to prepare an accurate listing of Massachusetts place names. The board’s staff compiler corresponded with town officials and residents in order to determine the historical background, local usage, and correct spelling of names. This series contains that correspondence in the form of carbon copies of the compiler’s letters and replies from the towns.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council (MDDC) was established by executive order in 1975 as an independent state agency (though placed within the Executive Office for Administration and Finance) funded by the federal government to work with the Commonwealth to better support persons with developmental disabilities and their families. The council assists the Commonwealth in carrying out its requirements for participation in P.L. 106-402 (Developmental Disabilities Act of 2000), precursor and successor legislation, or in any federal grant program that would provide funds for services to developmentally disabled individuals. It serves as the designated State Agency under P.L. 106-402, and receives funds made available to the Commonwealth as above. The council develops and submits a State Plan including the specifications of federal and state priority area activities , and has the final authority in making grants under the State Plan.

Scope and Content: A survey of the Commonwealth was commissioned by the governor in 1830 in order to prepare an accurate map of Massachusetts. The trigonometrical phase of the survey was put in charge of Simeon Borden in 1834 and he was required to keep this daily journal of work, to be submitted quarterly to the governor (Resolves 1834, c 73).

Scope and Content: The Civil Service Commission was established in 1884. It was abolished in 1919 and its functions transferred to the Division of Civil Service. It was revived as a separate body in 1939 and reconstituted in the Executive Office for Administration and Finance in 1974.

Scope and Content: The attorney general of Massachusetts is the Commonwealth’s chief legal officer. The Executive Bureau, which includes the attorney general and personal staff, is responsible for the overall supervision of the legal services provided by the office, for budgetary and personnel matters, and for the development of a uniform and consistent legal policy for the state. Series is created by the bureau’s constituent office unit to administer a program initiated by the attorney general in 1987 to reduce the demand for drugs of abuse.
