Scope and Content: The State Lunatic Hospital at Taunton was established by Massachusetts in 1853 and opened in 1854.  It was successfully renamed Taunton Lunatic Hospital in 1862, Taunton Insane Hospital in 1898, and Taunton State Hospital in 1909.

Scope and Content: The State Almshouse at Tewksbury was opened by Massachusetts in 1854.  It was successively renamed the State Hospital in 1900, the State Infirmary in 1911, Tewksbury State Hospital and Infirmary in 1939, and Tewksbury Hospital in 1958.

Scope and Content: The Experimental School for Teaching and Training Idiotic Children conducted at the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind from 1848 was incorporated by Massachusetts as the Massachusetts School for Idiotic and Feeble-Minded Youth in 1850.  It was renamed the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded in 1883 and the Walter E. Fernald State School in 1925.

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of Massachusetts, as executive administrator of the state’s military establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength.  An annual return was prepared by the adjutant general to provide the governor, as commander-in-chief, with information about military preparedness, which was then forwarded to the General Court.

Notes: A letter from the adjutant general to the governor, Dec. 1, 1805  transmitting that year’s return, details the procedure by which annual returns were distributed. Returns for 1793, 1795, 1799, 1814-1822, 1824-1826 lacking.
