Committee files [Massachusetts Governor’s Advisory Committee on the Sacco-Vanzetti Case]

Scope and Content: In connection with a robbery and murders committed Apr. 1920 in South Braintree, Massachusetts, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were indicted Sept. 1920 and prosecuted and convicted in 1921 in Norfolk Superior Court.  After reviews of the trial and conviction by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and by an advisory committee appointed by Gov. Alvan T. Fuller and denial of petitions by defense counsel in the U.S. Supreme Court, the sentence of execution originally imposed on Sacco and Vanzetti was carried out on Aug. 23, 1927.
Notes: Originals presented to Harvard by Henry A. Yeomans and Nora A. Dwyer, 1948; microfilm provided to the Massachusetts Archives to forestall an action of replevin against Harvard by the supervisor of public records on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, per agreement Dec. 12, 1977

Administrative files [Office of the White House Conference on Handicapped Individuals]

Scope and Content: Prior to the White House Conference on Handicapped Individuals, held in May 1977, states were responsible for holding conferences in which they heard testimony and prepared reports concerning their own services to the handicapped.  These administrative files were created to organize the Massachusetts Conference on Handicapped Individuals, to publicize the recommendations of the national conference, and in general to research and publicize issues concerning handicapped citizens.

Administrative files [Massachusetts Governor’s Select Committee on Judicial Needs]

Scope and Content: The committee was established by Governor Michael Dukakis in his first term to review the state’s judicial system and to make recommendations that would increase its efficiency.  These files document the work of the committee in its efforts to reform the Massachusetts court system.

Scope and Content: The committee was established by Governor Edward King (Exec. Order no. 159), to research and advise the governor on the disintegration of the American Family and its effect on children, and to educate the public by publicizing related issues.  These files were created to support that research and to document actions and recommendations of the committee.

Child Support Commission files [Massachusetts Governor’s Office of Human Resources]

Scope and Content: The Governor’s Office of Human Resources was established by Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1983 to act as a liaison between the governor and human service agencies in Massachusetts in the public and private sectors.  A Governor’s Commission on Child Support was established by the governor in 1984 pursuant to a federal statute (PL 98-378) that required states to develop guidelines for setting amounts of child support and ensuring its delivery; the commission’s work resulted in passage of the Child Welfare Reform Act (St 1986, c 310).  While administered largely through the Governor’s Office of Human Resources, the commission included representatives of all constituencies interested in child support enforcement process.  Series was created by the office to carry out the federal mandate.

Human Resources Forum files [Massachusetts Governor’s Office of Human Resources]

Scope and Content: The Governor’s Office of Human Resources was established by Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1983 to act as a liaison between the governor and human service agencies in Massachusetts in the public and private sectors.  A Human  Resources Forum comprised of representatives of human services organizations in Massachusetts and members of the governor’s administration was established by this office in 1983 to provide a mechanism for obtaining feedback from human services organizations and workers and to foster legislative initiatives.  Series was created to organize meetings of the forum.

Scope and Content: The Governor’s Office of Human Resources was established by Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1983 to act as a liaison between the governor and human service agencies in Massachusetts in the public and private sectors.  Series was created to advise the governor on human services issues and policy and to communicate the governor’s point of view on issues and policy to state executive offices and other agencies, gubernatorial commissions, federal agencies, advocacy groups, and private organizations.
Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by issue or agency, thereunder alphabetically by program or issue; additional files on the homeless in boxes 21-22, additional files for 1988-1990 in boxes 23-24.
