Minutes [Massachusetts State Board of Health]

Scope and Content: The State Board of Health, established in 1869, was abolished in 1879, and its functions absorbed by the State Board of Health, Lunacy, and Charity until 1886, when its was re-established. It was succeeded in turn by the State Department of Health in 1914 and the Department of Public Health in 1919.

Reports of smallpox cases [Massachusetts State Board of Health]

Scope and Content: The State Board of Health as part of its function to control and prevent disease required municipal boards of health to notify the board of the occurrence of a case of smallpox within twenty-four hours (St 1883, c 138).  Reports record this required information, as well as similar information from other state agencies.

Associate commissioner’s administrative files [Massachusetts Department of Public Health]

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Public Health protects the health of Commonwealth residents by maintaining state health facilities, regulating private health facilities, controlling disease, and regulating food, drugs, and other consumer products.  The associate commissioner of public health maintained these administrative files, documenting health planning, health protection, and health services.

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Public Health protects the health of Commonwealth residents by maintaining state health facilities, regulating private health facilities, controlling disease, and regulating food, drugs, and other consumer products.  The deputy commissioner of public health maintained these administrative files, documenting health planning, health protection, health services, community health, environmental health, and legal issues.

Bureau of Public Assistance policy statements [Massachusetts Division of Public Assistance]

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Dept. of Public Welfare has the responsibility to provide and administer a comprehensive public welfare financial assistance program (MGLA c 18 s 2).  Memorandums issued by the federal Social Security Administration’s Bureau of Public Assistance through 1958 and after that by the administration proper notified the department of changes in policy and procedures affecting the administration of federally-funded public assistance plans.  Files of such notifications for 1950-1952 were maintained by the department’s Division of Aid and Relief and from 1953 by its successor,  the Division of Public Assistance.
