Scope and Content: Pondville Hospital was operated by the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health from 1927 to 1981 as a facility to conduct cancer research and to treat cancer patients.  Series contains minutes from the superintendent’s administrative files for various institutional committee monthly meetings .

Scope and Content: Pondville Hospital was operated by the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health from 1927 to 1981 as a facility to conduct cancer research and to treat cancer patients.  The superintendent’s office maintained files relating to the groundbreaking (1969) and opening (1972) ceremonies for a new hospital facility.

Scope and Content: Pondville Hospital was operated by the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health from 1927 to 1981 as a facility to conduct cancer research and to treat cancer patients.  The superintendent’s office maintained files on the institutional acquisition of land in Norfolk and Walpole, including that for the predecessor facility on that site, Norfolk State Hospital (for the treatment of alcoholism).

Outpatient case files [North Reading State Sanatorium (Mass.).]

Scope and Content: North Reading State Sanatorium provided care and treatment for tuberculosis patients in Massachusetts from 1909 to 1962, being confined to juvenile clientele from 1927.  However, it also opened outpatient services to adults and children.  Case files were kept by sanatorium medical staff to provide a medical history and record of the physical examination resulting in recommendations for outpatients examined.

Inpatient case files [North Reading State Sanatorium (Mass.).]

Scope and Content: North Reading State Sanatorium, one of three additional state institutions authorized by St 1907, c 474 to join the Massachusetts State Sanatorium of Rutland in the care and treatment of tuberculosis patients, opened in Sept. 1909, and was officially named and put under the authority of the Trustees of Hospitals for Consumptives per St 1910, c 198 and c 491. Pursuant to St 1919, c 350, s 98 the sanatoria were placed under the Division of Sanatoria in the Dept. of Public Health. –Both adults and children were admitted as patients, but by 1927 all adults had been moved to other sanatoria. In response to an epidemic of rheumatic fever, St 1945, c 453 authorized admittance of children with that disease and St 1958, c 258 authorized admittance of children with any chronic disease. As part of a reorganization in the state tuberculosis treatment program, North Reading State Sanatorium was closed and its facilities transferred to the Dept. of Mental Health per St 1962, c 598. –Series consists of case files comprising a medical history and treatment record for each patient. Information includes patient name, case no., race, religion, occupation, previous medical history, family history of tuberculosis, treatment records, and dates of admission/discharge. Files may contain physical examination of lung form, temperature chart, dental records, and photograph of patient. Files dating from 1914 are sorted by gender, and within by case no., which were assigned chronologically by date of admittance. Starting from Sept. 1930, files are in strict case no. order and are extant only on microfilm.

Minutes [Massachusetts Public Health Council]

Scope and Content: The Public Health Council was established in 1914 as part of the State Dept. of Health (Dept. of Public Health from 1919) to make and promulgate rules and regulations, take evidence in appeals, consider plans and appointments required by law, hold hearings, and discharge other duties relating to public health as required by law.  Minutes have been created to record its activities, discussions, and actions.

Public health pamphlets [Massachusetts Department of Public Health]

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Public Health protects the health of Massachusetts residents by maintaining state health facilities, regulating private health facilities, controlling disease, and regulating food, drugs, and other consumer products. During the decades directly following its  establishment in 1919 as the latest in a succession of state public health agencies dating back to 1869, the Dept. of Public Health published a large number of pamphlets and leaflets designed for public distribution. Topics covered include food and nutrition, dental health, vaccination and disease prevention, and child health care. Series consists of a selection of such publications, some of which are reprints or later editions of earlier titles.

Annual reports [Massachusetts Department of Public Health]

Scope and Content: The State Board of Health, established in 1869, was abolished in 1879, and its functions absolved by the State Board of Health, Lunacy, and Charity until 1886, when it was reestablished.  It was succeeded in turn by the State Department of Health in 1914 and the Department of Public Health in 1919.
