Scope and Content: The Division of Family Health Services of the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health was established in 1969, and replaced successively by the Bureau of Parent, Child, and Adolescent Health ca. 1988 and the Bureau of Family and Community Health by 1992.

Advisory council minutes [Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services]

Scope and Content: The Advisory Council on Alcoholism was established in 1956 (first meeting in 1957) in connection with the office of the commissioner on alcoholism (until 1959) and the Division of Alcoholism in the Dept. of Public Health.  In 1982 it merged with the Dept. of Public Health’s Division of Drug Rehabilitation, accompanied by its Drug Rehabilitation Advisory Board.  With the merger of the two divisions in 1986 (known since 1991 as the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services), the two advisory bodies began to meet jointly, and since 1990 have been known informally as the Governor’s Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Drug Rehabilitation, and, since 1995, as the Governor’s Advisory Council on Substance Abuse Services.

Water supply notes [Massachusetts Division of Sanitary Engineering]

Scope and Content: State oversight of public drinking water supplies and systems in Massachusetts  has been exercised successively by the following agencies: State Board of Health (1869-1879), State Board of Health, Lunacy, and Charity (1879-1886), and State Board of Health (1886-1914); also State Dept. of Health (1914-1919) and Dept. of Public Health (1919-1975), specifically from 1914 under the Division of Sanitary Engineering, renamed Division of Environmental Health in 1969 (including its Bureau of Water Supply and Water Quality). As of 1975 the division’s functions were transferred to the Dept. of Environmental Quality Engineering (renamed Dept. of Environmental Protection in 1989), where that relating to water supply was assigned to the Division of Water Supply within the Bureau of Resource Protection.

Drinking water records [Massachusetts Division of Environmental Health]

Scope and Content: St 1869, c 420, which established the State Board of Health and Vital Statistics (commonly known as the State Board of Health), gave the department responsibility for the public water supplies of Massachusetts under the designation of sanitary investigations.  Successive public health agencies continued this responsibility, eventually known as the Drinking Water Program, by 1914 under the State Board of Health, and by 1919, under the Dept. of Public Health, through the Division of Sanitary Engineering and the Division of Water and Sewage Laboratories, and ultimately, 1969-1975, through the Division of Environmental Health. Effective July 1975 (per St 1974, c 806), the division was transferred to the new Dept. of Environmental Quality Engineering (later Dept. of Environmental Protection) under the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs.

Scope and Content: Cushing Hospital in Framingham, Mass., intended for the care and custody of elderly persons, was purchased by the Commonwealth from the federal government in 1955, opened in 1957 under the Dept. of Mental Health, transferred to the Dept. of Public Health in 1984, and closed in 1991. Round the Square as a hospital staff newsletter recorded messages from the superintendent, institutional news of general concern, as well as professional and volunteer activities and personal milestones of staff members.  It was preceded/succeeded by various other similar publications, 1979 and 1990, scattered numbers of which are filed with miscellaneous publications in: Annual reports with real property records and miscellaneous publications, 1947-1991 ((M-Ar)1318S).
