Scope and Content: The State Reform School for Girls, established in Massachusetts in 1855, was renamed the State Industrial School for Girls in 1856 and opened at Lancaster in 1857.  It was known as the Industrial School for Girls from 1911 and closed in 1973.

Scope and Content: The State Prison at charlestown, Boston, was opened in 1805 as a successor to the prison on Castle Island.  During 1878-1884 the prison was closed, and the inmates were kept at Concord.  With that exception, Charlestown remained the state prison until replaced by a new facility at Walpole in the mid-1950s.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Hospital for Consumptives and Tubercular Patients was established in 1895 and opened at Rutland in 1898.  It was successively renamed the Massachusetts State Sanatorium in 1900, Rutland State Sanatorium in 1910, Rutland Hospital in 1963, and after the move to a new facility, Rutland Heights Hospital in 1965.

Scope and Content: In Massachusetts, as of 1880, Trustees of the State Primary and Reform Schools (i.e, the State Primary School at Monson, the State Reform School at Westborough, and the State Industrial School for Girls at Lancaster) replaced the primary school inspectors and the other individual trustee boards. In 1895, after the abolition of the primary school, the board was renamed the Trustees of the Lyman (following a 1884 reform school name change) and Industrial Schools. In 1911, the board was merged with trustees of the Industrial School for Boys at Shirley (founded 1908) to form the Trustees of Massachusetts Training Schools. The trustee boards had been placed successively under the State Board of Health, Lunacy, and Charity (1879), State Board of Lunacy and Charity (1886), State Board of Charity (1898), and Dept. of Public Welfare (1919). In 1948 the trustee board was replaced by the Youth Service Board, and as of 1952 jurisdiction over the individual institutions was delegated to a Division of Youth Service. The board and division were abolished in 1969, to be succeeded by the Bureau of of Institutional Services of the Dept. of Youth Services.

Scope and Content: Norfolk State Hospital was established by Massachusetts in 1912 as a colony of the Foxborough State Hospital.  It acquired its own board of trustees in 1914, receiving Foxborough’s inebriate patients.  The Norfolk facility was not used as a state hospital after 1919.
