Scope and Content: The State Colony for the Insane was established by Massachusetts in 1900 and opened at Gardner in 1902.  It was renamed Gardner State Colony in 1909 and Gardner State Hospital in 1935.  It was closed in 1976.

Scope and Content: The Temporary Asylum for the Chronic Insane (known also as The Asylum for the Chronic Insane) was established by Massachusetts in Worcester in 1877.  It was successively renamed Worcester Insane Asylum in 1887, Worcester State Asylum in 1887, Worcester Sate Asylum in 1909, and with the planned opening of a new facility, Grafton State Hospital in 1915.  That institution was closed in 1974.
