Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is the state agency responsible for operation and maintenance of commercial aviation, maritime, and (to 2009) certain bridge facilities in and around the Port of Boston.  The engineering unit of its engineering division manages procurement and implementation of Massport design and construction contracts and monitoring of approved projects from proposal to completion, including requesting bids and proposals, and selecting designs and contractors.  Series supports these activities as reference until project completion. –Files may contain legal notices, bids, correspondence, change orders, daily reports, minutes, conformed copy of contract, payment record, and photographs; also as-built plans, summaries, specifications, and land disposition vital records.  Topics include consultant selection, design review, and environmental clearances. –Currently archived files include items relating to lands at or near the Port of Boston, some originating from before the Authority’s establishment in 1956.  Holdings are as follows: acc. 2014/08–Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Shipbuilding Division: (1) Bethlehem-Hingham shipyard plans, 1944; (2) Fore River Yard plans, 1943-1944; (3) Boston yards plans, 1944; (4) Boston yard property maps, 1958. Boston Army Supply Base: (5) Utility atlases and operating plans, 1919 (U.S. War Dept. Construction Division); (6) Survey of condition of structures, 1963 (MassPort). (7) Work summary for transportation systems studies for Third Harbor Tunnel, 1984 (MassPort). (8) Commonwealth Ice and Cold Storage Co. Blueprints, 1913. –acc. 2014/15–(boxes 1-4) Mystic River (1947)/Maurice J. Tobin Memorial (1967) Bridge linking Charlestown and Chelsea: land-taking, engineering, environmental, toll study files, including plans and photographs; (box 5) financial feasibility studies (2008) re possible transfer of Metropolitan Highway System from Massachusetts Turnpike Authority  to Massachusetts  Port Authority;  possible transfer of Tobin Bridge from Massachusetts Port Authority to Dept. of Transportation (accomplished by St 2009, c 25, which also transferred Massachusetts Turnpike Authority  functions to the department).
