Scope and Content: The Board to Investigate the Subject of the Unemployed inquired into the subject of the unemployed in Massachusetts and measures for their relief by the Commonwealth and its municipalities. To further its investigations the board conducted a survey of private and public sector employers and union officials from throughout the state, as recorded in this series. –Subseries (1) contains survey data in tabular form by occupation: no. persons employed (male, female, total) and unemployed (male, female, total) by month for 1892-1893. Relationship to series survey itself and to data from: Transcript of hearings ((M-Ar)1354X) unclear. –Subseries (2) contains completed questionnaires or equivalent letters from employers/union officials responding to a series of queries (as used in series ((M-Ar)1354X cited above) regarding levels of employment/unemployment and wages/trade-union benefits paid, 1892-1894.

Scope and Content: The Joint Special Committee on the Financial Condition of the Commonwealth, appointed by order of the Massachusetts General Court, in June 1865 requested from each municipality a statement of its indebtness on account of the Civil War, for future reference should the federal government assume responsibility for such indebtness. Returns from cities and towns contain their responses to this request.

Scope and Content: Successive committees of the House of Representatives were appointed to receive, examine, and pass upon accounts submitted for payment for purchases and services approved by the Revolutionary Massachusetts General Court. From 1780, a joint standing committee of both houses of the Constitutional General Court (by at least 1782 known as the Committee on Accounts) performed the same function. Approved accounts were forwarded to the Council (for concurrence as of 1776), which issued warrants for payment by the Treasury.

Scope and Content: In connection with a robbery and murders committed Apr. 1920 in South Braintree, Massachusetts, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were indicted Sept. 1920 and prosecuted and convicted in 1921 in Norfolk Superior Court. After reviews of the trial and conviction by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and by an advisory committee appointed by Gov. Alvan T. Fuller and denial of petitions by defense counsel in the U.S. Supreme Court, the sentence of execution originally imposed on Sacco and Vanzetti was carried out on Aug. 23, 1927.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities was established to maintain a continuing study of the cultural resources of the Commonwealth. During 1987 the council, in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Folklife Programs, conducted fieldwork to identify and locate traditional folk artists from Massachusetts to participate in the 22nd annual Festival of American Folklife, held on the grounds of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., July 1988. Photographic slides were made to document the festival.
Topics include arts and crafts exhibited, persons attending the festival, and musicians and dancers performing.

Scope and Content: The Revolutionary War Bicentennial Commission (or Massachusetts Bicentennial Commission) was established in 1964 to plan the observance by Massachusetts of the bicentennial of the historic events preceding the Revolutionary War. As such it helped to prepare, arrange, and coordinate bicentennial events throughout the state. Sound recordings and visual materials were created to promote and raise funds for events, prepare communities, and document events of the celebration.
