Scope and Content: The attorney general of Massachusetts is the Commonwealth’s chief legal officer. The Executive Bureau, which includes the attorney general and personal staff, is responsible for the overall supervision of the legal services provided by the office, for budgetary and personnel matters, and for the development of a uniform and consistent legal policy for the state. Series is created by the bureau to review and enable the attorney general to testify regarding legislation pending in the General Court.

Scope and Content: The Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture (until 2005: Joint Committee on Natural Resources and Agriculture), a standing committee of the Massachusetts General Court, considers all matters pertaining to natural resources and the environment: air, water, and noise pollution and control thereof; hunting and fishing; conservation; solid and hazardous waste disposal; sewerage; agricultural and farm problems; and other matters referred. It drafts, reviews, and holds hearings on proposed legislation. Legislative/hearing files are compiled to document legislation considered by the committee and hearings thereon, including preparation, hearing proper, and subsequent actions. –Files may contain House and Senate draft and final bills and draft amendments, with accompanying bill analysis; hearing schedules; petitions, statements, and correspondence supporting or opposing proposed legislation; testimony; and background materials including reports, memorandums, and copies of laws and legal files.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities was established to maintain a continuing study of the cultural resources of the Commonwealth. During 1987, the council, in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Folklife Programs, conducted fieldwork to identify and locate traditional folk artists from massachsuetts to participate in the 22nd annual Festival of American Folklife, held on the grounds of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., July 1988. In documenting interviews in the areas of traditional narrative, occupational folklife, foodways, and traditional music, folklorists created interview tapes.
Audiocassettes are recordings of interviews with folk artists, and contain information about the ethnic heritage of the interview subject, the history and method of the folkway being documented, recipes, songs, legends, and related information. Massachusetts folklife interview files were created in conjunction with this series.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts War Memorial Commission, established in 1930 as the Massachusetts War Memorial Investigating Commission and revived in 1931, was mandated to conduct a competition among Massachusetts architects to procure a design for a memorial to Massachusetts men and women serving in all wars. Series consists of designs generated by the competition.
