Maps of Boston Harbor [Thayer, Sylvanus, 1785-1872]

Scope and Content: Sylvanus Thayer was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1808, served as superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, 1817-1833, and was then U.S. Army engineer in charge of construction of fortifications at the entrance to Boston Harbor and of improvements to New England harbors generally; he retired from the Army in 1863 with the brevetted rank of  brigadier-general.  He established the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College in 1867, and provided a fund for a public library in Braintree, Mass., his residence.

Photographs of World War I French battlefields [Irwin, Robert]

Scope and Content: Series consists chiefly of photographs taken and other materials collected by Robert Irwin, partly in his capacity as secretary of a Massachusetts state commission to identify and care for graves of Massachusetts World War I dead abroad, and to document events, activities, and settings involving the 26th (Yankee) Division, Massachusetts National Guard, during and after World War I. –Files contain lantern slides, photograph album, panoramic photographs menus, mess tickets, pamphlets, and photocopied news clippings.  Topics include: Fort Dowling (Framingham, Mass.), French battlefields and villages, and graves of American war dead overseas.

Plans of buildings and structures [Warnecke-Cannon]

Military documents of Ship Island [Noyes, James, Capt]

Scope and Content: During the Civil War, Ship Island, Mississippi, served the Union Army as a place of detention for political prisoners, military convicts, and Confederate prisoners of war.  Series documents activities of Ship Island Provost Marshal James Noyes, successively lieutenant and captain in the 74th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment.

Research files on Deborah Sampson Gannett [Stickley, Julia Ward]

Scope and Content: Julia Ward Stickley, a staff member of the National Archives, researched the life of Deborah Sampson Gannett, a Massachusetts resident who, disguised as a man, enlisted as Robert Shurtliff in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment of the Continental Army.  Gannett served in several battles and was injured and hospitalized, when her sex was discovered and she was honorably discharged from military service.  Series gathers copies of Stickley’s research sources and correspondence concerning Gannett.

Social correspondence of Governor and Mrs. Oliver Ames [Ames, Anna Ray]

Scope and Content: Social correspondence of Oliver Ames (lieutenant governor of Massachusetts 1883-1887; governor, 1883-1890) and his wife Anna (Ray) Ames includes letters to them (often answering invitations to social events), postcards, invitations, calling cards, genealogical charts, news clippings, and a tintype family portrait.

Diary of a Civil War soldier [Everett, George H.]

Scope and Content: George H. Everett served in the Civil War as a private in Company C of the 44th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia.  His diary contains observations of daily life of a Union private from camp in Readville, Mass. (Aug. 29, 1862) to duty in North Carolina (Feb. 3, 1863).
