Adjutant General’s Office: Index to naval bounty payments

April 20, 2017 Posted by martzahl

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength.  During the Civil War these activities were intensified, particularly as they related to fulfillment of municipal recruitment quotas and determinations of entitlement to state aid and bounties.  This index records Massachusetts servicemen enlisting in the U.S. Navy.  It was created to index payrolls that detail bounty payments made to naval personnel (St 1864, c 143, s 3; c 211, s 2).
Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by surname
Notes: Although the adjutant general had responsibility for militia pay records before, during, and after the Civil War, including this series, from Dec. l864 (pursuant to General Order 51) such records were in the specific custody of the paymaster general until that office lapsed in 1866. A typed note attached to the front flyleaf, probably prepared by Frederick W. Cross, military archivist, provides historical background on the creation of the series.  A note from the Office of Paymaster of State Bounties is affixed to the first page

Adjutant General’s Office: Rolls of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia

April 20, 2017 Posted by martzahl

Scope and Content: Rolls were created to provide an abstract of the Civil War service record of soldiers in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia units, those that served shorter terms, including three months, nine months, and one hundred days. The rolls are arranged by regiment and then company, with officers listed first and then privates alphabetically by first letter of surname. –Information includes name, rank, occupation, age, marital status, residence, town credited to, date enlisted, date mustered, reenlistment date, date mustered out. Sometimes type of roll (descriptive, muster, island, misc., elective, provost marshal, re-enlist, muster-out) is given (with roll no.) where information was presumably gathered. The series: Descriptive lists of recruits for Massachusetts Volunteers, 1863-1864 ((M-Ar)477X), Muster rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers, 1861-1865 ((M-Ar)441X), and Muster-out rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers, 1864-1866 ((M-Ar)727X) are the most frequently cited. A remarks field contains information on the death, desertion, discharge or transfer of the soldier, including transfer to the Navy or service in later regiments. These annotations continued into the early twentieth century as new information continued to be gathered from the War Dept. and other sources for confirming service records for pension claims, and for publication of:  Massachusetts soldiers, sailors, and marines in the Civil War (1931-1937). –For an account of three-year soldiers see: Rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers, 1861-1865 ((M-Ar)443X).
