Adjutant General’s Office: Massachusetts Volunteer Militia photographs

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, came to be responsible for preserving information about past military episodes and service relating to Massachusetts.  This series consists of halftone photographs of posed pictures of various units and officers of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia before and during the Spanish-American War.

Adjutant General’s Office: Muster-out rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers

Scope and Content: During the Civil War, muster-out rolls (July 1864-Jan. 1866) documented the official completion of federal service by a given Massachusetts military unit or individual. These rolls were produced in multiples by company clerks and received by various government offices, one each to the company commander, Adjutant General of the Army, and the Bounty Bureau, and two to the paymaster. Series contains rolls for regiments of the Massachusetts Volunteers, primarily 3-year units that often mustered out before their 3-year term was completed, due to the end of the war. Information on the rolls includes pay/bounty obligations already met, as well as those needing settlement. –On both types of muster-out rolls, headings indicate commanding officer, company, regiment, place, date and length of enlistment (generally 3 years) and date discharged. Listed for each soldier is his name, age, rank, unit, when where and by whom enrolled and mustered. Financial information can include: date and by whom last paid; money due the soldier, the government or the sutler for clothing; and bounty or back pay paid or remaining due. A remarks column may give a variety of information about the soldier’s status, including illnesses, hospitalizations, death/killed in action, missing, absent without leave, transfers (including Navy service), prisoner of war status, pay earned, and promotions. Restrictions: Restricted as fragile (crumbling, brittle, some staining). Bound and silked versions of these rolls at the Massachusetts National Guard Military Museum and Archives in Concord should be used instead

Adjutant General’s Office: Gettysburg maps

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, came to be responsible for preserving information about past military episodes and service relating to Massachusetts.  These maps were created to show the positions occupied by Union and Confederate forces on each of the three days of the Gettysburg battle.

Returns were completed and endorsed by brigade commanders to provide their divisional commanders and the adjutant general with information concerning the strength, organization, and provisioning of the militia.

Adjutant General’s Office: State military property affidavits

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has general superintendency over military stores and property.  These affidavits detail consumable military property that had been lost, stolen, destroyed, or expended; they were prepared by company commanders of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia pursuant to Special Order 101 (June 1, 1911) and forwarded to the adjutant general through the quartermaster general.

Adjutant General’s Office: German war trophies allotment ledger

Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has general superintendency over military stores and property.  After World War I, federal and state authorities cooperated in making available as trophies various stores of military property confiscated from the Germans.  This material, consisting of such items as swords, bayonets, rifles, accouterments, and small artillery pieces, was distributed among the states, who in turn arranged to sell it to a variety of purchasers, including municipalities, American Legion posts, and individuals.  This ledger details the purchase of trophies by organizations and individuals in Massachusetts from the state quartermaster, acting on behalf of the adjutant general.
