Scope and Content: The State Lunatic Hospital at Northampton was established in 1855 and opened in 1858.  It was successively renamed Northampton Lunatic Hospital in 1862, Northampton Insane Hospital in 1898, and Northampton State Hospital in 1906.

Bridgewater judicial transfer files [Massachusetts Division of Legal Medicine]

Scope and Content: The Division of Legal Medicine was established in 1956 to provide psychiatric services to courts and correctional institutions and to ensure that persons who came into contact with the criminal justice system received needed mental health care.  St 1967, c 620 established special procedures whereby persons confined at Bridgewater State Hospital pursuant to then MGLA c 123, ss 51, 103-105 (cf. since 1970, ss 5-6, 18), could petition for hearings relative to their confinement.  Bridgewater judicial transfer files were created by the Division of Legal Medicine in the course of carrying out its responsibility for coordinating the transfer of those who, as a result of a judicial hearing, were to be transferred from Bridgewater, a maximum security facility, to other state hospitals for the mentally ill.

State hospital discharge case files [Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Division of Legal Medicine]

Scope and Content: The Division of Legal Medicine was established in 1956 to provide psychiatric services to courts and correctional institutions and to ensure that persons who came into contact with the criminal justice system received needed mental health care.  Pursuant to then MGLA c 123, ss 90, 100, and 101 (cf. since 1970, ss 4, 15-16), the Dept. of Mental Health held responsibilities, exercised through the division, in the discharge from the state hospitals of insane persons who were known to have attempted or committed violence against others or persons who had been indicted for murder or manslaughter but acquitted by reason of insanity.  State hospital discharge case files were created to provide a record of the discharge approval process.

Adult after-care clinic case files [Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Division of Legal Medicine]

Scope and Content: The Division of Legal Medicine was established in 1956 to provide psychiatric services to courts and correctional institutions and to ensure that persons who came into contact with the criminal justice system received needed mental health care.  An adult after-care clinic was responsible for treating and evaluating, on an outpatient basis, persons who had recently been paroled or discharged from correction facilities whether such treatment was a condition of parole or was voluntarily requested.  Adult after-care clinic case files were created to provide a record of the treatment and psychiatric evaluation of these persons.

Scope and Content: The Division of Legal Medicine was established in 1956 to provide psychiatric services to courts and correctional institutions and to ensure that persons who came into contact with the criminal justice system received needed mental health care.  Director’s administrative files, consisting of correspondence, minutes, memorandums, drafts, and legal files, were created in the course of carrying out these responsibilities and reflect the director’s activities in this area as well as participation in broader departmental activities.

Scope and Content: The Division of Legal Medicine was established in 1956 to provide psychiatric services to courts and correctional institutions and to ensure that persons who came into contact with the criminal justice system received needed mental health care.  To fulfill this responsibility the division held clinics for incarcerated adults and children in correction and juvenile facilities as well as a clinic for paroled children and adults.  Connvict treatment case files were created to provide a record of the treatment and psychiatric evaluation of these persons.
