Scope and Content: The Commissioners of Prisons were established in 1870.  They reconstituted as the Board of Commissioners of Prisons in 1879, and were succeeded in turn by the Board of Prison Commissioners in 1901, the Massachusetts Bureau of Prisons in 1916, and the Department of Correction 1919.

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Correction is responsible for administering the state correctional system and providing custodial and rehabilitative services to persons sentenced to state correctional institutions.  Reference files consist of miscellaneous records of the commissioner that relate to correctional facilities and corrections policies.

Director of classification administrative files [Massachusetts Department of Correction]

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Correction is responsible for administering the state correctional system and providing custodial and rehabilitative services to persons sentenced to state correctional institutions.  The Classification Office in the department performs background investigations of inmates for institutions in the system and responds to requests for family background from other states under terms of interstate compact.  In addition the office is responsible for preparing certificates of discharge for inmates upon termination of sentence.  Administrative files contain memoranda, correspondence, and reports that relate to the functions of the office.

Lists of capital punishment cases [Massachusetts Department of Correction]

Scope and Content: The Dept. of Correction is responsible for administering the state correctional system and providing custodial and rehabilitative services to persons sentenced to state correctional institutions.  Lists of capital punishment cases at state prison facilities (i.e., Castle Island, Charlestown, and Walpole) were created by the central office of the department to compile statistics.

Scope and Content: The Nautical Branch of the State Reform School, known as the Massachusetts Nautical School from 1867, was authorized in 1859 and in operation in Boston and later New Bedford between 1860 and 1872. Delinquent boys were instructed in seamanship and navigation, and if successful, transferred to outside shipping.  Case histories document students’ background, stay at, and discharge from the institution, for those berthed on the ship George M. Barnard, acquired in 1866.

Administrative files [Lyman School for Boys]

Scope and Content: The State Reform School was founded in 1847 and opened in 1848 at Westborough for the instruction, discipline, employment, and reform of male juvenile offenders in Massachusetts. It was renamed the Lyman School for Boys in 1884 and closed in 1972. Series consists of administrative files of the Lyman School, primarily of superintendent John Borys (1956-1964).
