Scope and Content: The Revolutionary War Bicentennial Commission (or Massachusetts Bicentennial Commission) was established in 1964 to plan the observance by Massachusetts of the bicentennial of the historic events preceding the Revolutionary War.  As such it helped to prepare, arrange, and coordinate bicentennial events throughout the state.  Series was created to administer application for and funding of matching grants for cities and towns for bicentennial projects and activities (awarded by the Executive Office of Education, per St 1974, c 686) and to organize and oversee events, contests, and programs sponsored by the commission.

Scope and Content: Pursuant to Resolves 1969, c 61, a special commission consisting of three members of the Senate, seven members of the House of Representatives, the superintendent of schools of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, and twenty-two others was charged with examining the degree of need for granting public aid to nonpublic primary and secondary schools and reporting to the General Court before the first Wednesday of January 1971.  This set of unofficial files, maintained by the archdiocese during the commission’s study, consists of minutes of meetings, transcripts of public hearings, surveys and reports, correspondence, and newspaper clippings and other printed material.

Scope and Content: The Hazardous Waste Facility Site Safety Council was an independent Massachusetts state agency responsible in conjunction with the Dept. of Environmental Management and the Dept. of Environmental Protection for overseeing siting of hazardous waste treatment facilities from 1980 to 1996.  Siting process as administered by the council included receiving and reviewing developer’s proposal and facilitating negotiations among developer and affected communities prior to the reaching of a siting agreement declared operative by the council.  Council work was delegated to various working committees or subcommittees; series was created to document their discussions and recommendations.

Scope and Content: The Massachusetts Committee on Public Safety, originally operational during World War I, was resurrected by Gov. Leverett Saltonstall on Aug. 23, 1940 in anticipation of U.S. involvement in World War II. The committee was confirmed by Exec Order no. 1, Dec. 31, 1941, pursuant to St 1941, c 719, as an agency of the Executive Dept. The committee’s role was extended on Jan. 31, 1942 by St 1942, c 13, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It was ultimately dissolved with the war’s end in May 1945. The committee was responsible for organizing, supervising, directing, and coordinating local committees on public safety in the cities and towns of the Commonwealth. The committee carried out its duties through administrative divisions and nine regional zones, each with regional offices staffed with state employees as well as extensive volunteer involvement. The responsibilities of the local committees included management of air raid precautions and other civilian defense programs necessary to protect lives and property.
