Rolls of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, 1861-1865.
13 volumes
Call no.: PS1/465X
Scope and Content: Rolls were created to provide an abstract of the Civil War service record of soldiers in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia units, those that served shorter terms, including three months, nine months, and one hundred days. The rolls are arranged by regiment and then company, with officers listed first and then privates alphabetically by first letter of surname. –Information includes name, rank, occupation, age, marital status, residence, town credited to, date enlisted, date mustered, reenlistment date, date mustered out. Sometimes type of roll (descriptive, muster, island, misc., elective, provost marshal, re-enlist, muster-out) is given (with roll no.) where information was presumably gathered. The series: Descriptive lists of recruits for Massachusetts Volunteers, 1863-1864 ((M-Ar)477X), Muster rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers, 1861-1865 ((M-Ar)441X), and Muster-out rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers, 1864-1866 ((M-Ar)727X) are the most frequently cited. A remarks field contains information on the death, desertion, discharge or transfer of the soldier, including transfer to the Navy or service in later regiments. These annotations continued into the early twentieth century as new information continued to be gathered from the War Dept. and other sources for confirming service records for pension claims, and for publication of: Massachusetts soldiers, sailors, and marines in the Civil War (1931-1937). –For an account of three-year soldiers see: Rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers, 1861-1865 ((M-Ar)443X). For similar records of sailors, see: Descriptive lists of Massachusetts Volunteers in the U.S. Navy, 1861-1865 ((M-Ar)458X). –A glued-in sheet containing resolutions of the veterans of the 47th Regiment, dated Sept. 2, 1901, is found in v. 9 (47th-48th regiments). A photostat certifying Winslow Lewis as a member of the Boston Light Infantry Association, dated Nov. 1, 1862, is in v. 7 (43rd-44th regiments)
