Scope and Content: The Board to Investigate the Subject of the Unemployed inquired into the subject of the unemployed in Massachusetts and measures for their relief by the Commonwealth and its municipalities.  To further its investigations the board conducted a survey of private and public sector employers and union officials from throughout the state, as recorded in this series. –Subseries (1) contains survey data in tabular form by occupation: no. persons employed (male, female, total) and unemployed (male, female, total) by month for 1892-1893.  Relationship to series survey itself and to data from: Transcript of hearings ((M-Ar)1354X) unclear. –Subseries (2) contains completed questionnaires or equivalent letters from employers/union officials responding to a series of queries (as used in series ((M-Ar)1354X cited above) regarding levels of employment/unemployment and wages/trade-union benefits paid, 1892-1894.

Scope and Content: The Joint Special Committee on the Financial Condition of the Commonwealth, appointed by order of the Massachusetts General Court, in June 1865 requested from each municipality a statement of its indebtness on account of the Civil War, for future reference should the federal government assume responsibility for such indebtness.  Returns from cities and towns contain their responses to this request.

Scope and Content: Successive committees of the House of Representatives were appointed to receive, examine, and pass upon accounts submitted for payment for purchases and services approved by the Revolutionary Massachusetts General Court. From 1780, a joint standing committee of both houses of the Constitutional General Court (by at least 1782 known as the Committee on Accounts) performed the same function. Approved accounts were forwarded to the Council (for concurrence as of 1776), which issued warrants for payment by the Treasury.

Scope and Content: The Revolutionary War Bicentennial Commission (or Massachusetts Bicentennial Commission) was established in 1964 to plan the observance by Massachusetts of the bicentennial of the historic events preceding the Revolutionary War.  As such it helped to prepare, arrange, and coordinate bicentennial events throughout the state.  Sound recordings and visual materials were created to promote and raise funds for events, prepare communities, and document events of the celebration.

Scope and Content: As part of a survey of the Commonwealth commissioned by the governor in 1830 in order to prepare an accurate map of Massachusetts, geographic locations of base points were determined by calculations made from trigonometrical and astronomical measurements taken in the field.  This series contains two notebooks of data calculated by Simeon Borden from trigonometrical survey field notebooks; an 1838 final report with calculations by Robert Treat Paine, the astronomical surveyor; and an 1846 published monograph of latitude and longitude tables based on the trigonometrical and astronomical work, with partial ms. draft.

It drafts, reviews, and holds hearings on proposed legislation. Subject files are compiled by and for the committee during the process of drafting and reviewing legislation to create a portfolio of background information, related research, and news concerning topics brought to the committee’s attention through legislation and hearings. –Files contain background materials on subjects concerning proposed legislation drafted and reviewed by the committee.
