German war trophies allotment ledger, 1925-1935.
Call no.: PS1/717X
Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has general superintendency over military stores and property. After World War I, federal and state authorities cooperated in making available as trophies various stores of military property confiscated from the Germans. This material, consisting of such items as swords, bayonets, rifles, accouterments, and small artillery pieces, was distributed among the states, who in turn arranged to sell it to a variety of purchasers, including municipalities, American Legion posts, and individuals. This ledger details the purchase of trophies by organizations and individuals in Massachusetts from the state quartermaster, acting on behalf of the adjutant general.
