Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, came to be responsible for preserving information about past military episodes and service relating to Massachusetts.  This series comprises a research file assembled by Frederick W. Cross, military archivist in the Adjutant General’s Office, in the course of his work on the publication: Massachusetts soldiers, sailors, and marines in the Civil War.

Notes: These materials were bequeathed to Williams College by Frederick Cross. They were returned to the custody of the state (specifically the Adjutant General’s Office) in 1950 by Williams College Librarian Wyllis E. Wright, a letter from whom details the transfers
