Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength. Local boards of assessors were required to gather the names of all males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five liable for military service, passing the information on to the adjutant general through the offices of town and city clerks (St 1840, c 92, ss 2-4). This series consists of lists of men by Boston ward who were liable to perform military duty.
