Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength; these activities were intensified during the Civil War.  The state militia was being reorganized and strengthened to meet the needs of common defense for Massachusetts on the basis of authority given to the governor by St 1863, c 243.  This series, consisting of completed forms bound together, validates the enlistment of men in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia.
