Scope and Content: The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state’s Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength; these activities were intensified during the Civil War. Prepared at the request of the Massachusetts adjutant general by Marine Corps officials, this series documents Massachusetts enlistees in the U.S. Marine Corps at that time.
