Scope and Content: The Commissioners of Prisons were established in 1870. They reconstituted as the Board of Commissioners of Prisons in 1879, and were succeeded in turn by the Board of Prison Commissioners in 1901, the Massachusetts Bureau of Prisons in 1916, and the Department of Correction 1919.
