Report of the Land Commissioners [Massachusetts Land Office]
Report of the Land Commissioners, 1820.
Call no.: EA2/77X
Scope and Content: Under successive authorizations, the Land Office oversaw the management and sale of public lands in Maine for the Commonwealth during the first half of the 19th century. As a part of this function, the office administered and recorded the settlement of disputed claims. This report documents the validation and settlement of claims relating to lands mortgaged by Leonard Jarvis, based on findings earlier determined in a report by George Herbert (Report concerning lands mortgaged by Leonard Jarvis ((M-Ar)87X); see also Joseph Lee’s Memorandum of claims to land in the town of Penobscot ((M-Ar)78X)). This report, concerning land in Penobscot, Surrey, and Ellsworth, reflects the actual adjustment of claims made by the Land Office for those individuals who had settled on or taken possession of lands mortgaged to Jarvis.
