IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

There have been many important industries centered in Greenfield over the past 300 years, but two stand out: cutlery and silversmithing, and the invention and production of tap & die technology for standardizing threaded screws and bolts. Concurrent with these, the D. B. Kellogg store served the community as a dry-goods store, including owners and employees at the above-listed industries.

This collection includes artifacts and ephemera from these businesses.

Greenfield Tap & Die came into being in 1912. The company was founded by Frederick Payne and Frank O. Wells of the Wells Brothers Co., following a hostile takeover of Wiley & Russell Manufacturing Co.. GTD purchased many of the local machining businesses over the next decade, including F. E. Wells & Son in 1917. During WWII, GTD was deemed a business critical to the war effort, and a anti-aircraft gun was stationed outside the plant. Beginning in 1958 Greenfield Tap & Die Corp. went through a series of mergers, ownership and organizational changes. A small branch of GTD is still in Greenfield, as a subsidiary of Kennametal, Inc.

Lunt Silversmiths was formed in 1902, when George E. Rogers, George C. Lunt and William C. Bowlen made a bid to take over the bankrupt A. F. Towle & Son silver company. Lunt and Bowlen had been employed by Towle & Son, and renamed the company Rogers, Lunt & Bowlen. Four generations of the Lunt family operated the business, which was renamed Lunt Silversmiths in 1935. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2009, and the  name and inventory was sold to competitor Reed & Barton, which in turn filed for bankruptcy in 2015.

Dwight B. Kellogg operated a store at 77 Main Street, called D. B. Kellogg & Bros, Dr. He never married, never had children, and lived a quiet life out of the public eye except for belonging to a local fraternity and running a grocery store for 25 years. after taking over the business from his father Bella Kellogg.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of artifacts and ephemera pertaining to three  businesses in Greenfield MA. Ephemera, advertising, catalogs, and cast metal dies and silver pieces make up the bulk of the collection.

System of Arrangement: Collection is arranged in three series.

Series 1, Greenfield Tap & Die; including a great number of stock records, business files, blueprints, and employee newsletters, as well as a large assortment of taps and dies, some in their original tool cases. Larger items include framed paintings of the founders, large signs from the GTD plant, and wall maps of GTD offices nationally.

Series 2, Lunt Silversmiths; including sales catalogs, advertising ephemera, a small assortment of silver items, and newspaper clippings.

Series 3, D. B. Kellogg store receipts; including receipts dated 9 Nov 1903 through 9 April 1904. Not all dates are present, but a fair sample from all months, including 31 Dec 1903, New Years Eve. Receipts were found in small rusted metal drawers which were obviously for that purpose, but without any other marks and without the furniture that housed them.
